Armagnac 1919 – Historic Spirits

An exceptional selection of spirits and fortified wines from the 1919 vintage — Armagnac, Banyuls, Maury, and Rivesaltes born in post-war France, in the aftermath of the Armistice.

1919 Armagnac: the first vintage of peace, distilled the year of the Treaty of Versailles

1919 - the year peace was regained. On June 28, the Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Hall of Mirrors: the official end of the Great War after 4 years of carnage and 18 million dead. The League of Nations was created - the first attempt at an international organization to maintain peace. In Gascony, the winemakers who returned from the front - those who survived - distilled in peace for the first time since 1914. These 1919 casks are the first casks of regained freedom. The Tour de France resumed after a five-year suspension: Firmin Lambot won the 1919 edition, symbolizing the return of popular joy and great sporting celebrations. In cinema, D.W. Griffith released Broken Blossoms, a visual poem of rare beauty and delicacy - a masterpiece of post-war silent film. On music hall stages, the young George Gershwin released his first major song: Swanee, performed by Al Jolson, the first hit of the post-war era. The Spanish flu, which began in 1918, finished ravaging the world in 1919: 50 million dead. Humanity emerged exhausted and bruised, but the vines and the people were reborn. After 107 years of aging in Gascon oak barrels, the 1919 Armagnacs carry within them all the gravity and hope of this first vintage of peace: a rancio of absolute historical depth, sacred incense, spices from another century. Artifacts unique in the world.
