1944 Armagnac: distilled in the year of the D-Day Landings and the Liberation of Paris
1944 - the year that changed the course of the war and history. On June 6th, Operation Overlord launched 156,000 Allied soldiers onto the beaches of Normandy - the largest amphibious landing in history. On August 25th, Paris was liberated: de Gaulle walked down the Champs-Élysées to the cheers of a jubilant crowd. In Gascony, while history was turning, winemakers were distilling in silence in their cellars - an act of faith and continuity amidst the turmoil. At the cinema, Billy Wilder created Double Indemnity with Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray - a foundational masterpiece of American film noir, a genre that would dominate Hollywood for a decade. On the airwaves, Bing Crosby sang Swinging on a Star, winner of the Oscar for Best Original Song - a tune of joy and hope in a year of pain and liberation. The Tour de France remained suspended - France was not yet liberated when the cycling season began. After 82 years of aging in Gascon oak barrels, 1944 Armagnacs are living witnesses to the Liberation: rancio of historical intensity, deep incense, ultra-candied prunes, rare spices. Pieces with an absolutely unique emotional and symbolic weight.
