1938 Armagnac – 88 Years Old, Born on the Eve of the Storm

1938, Europe signs the Munich Agreement, believing war has been averted. In Gascony, distillation continues, unaware that everything is about to change. Our 1938 Armagnacs, after 88 years of aging in oak barrels, carry within them the gravity of an era poised on the brink of the abyss.

1938 Armagnac: Born on the Eve of the Storm

1938 - Hitler annexes Austria during the Anschluss in March. In September, the Munich Agreement between Chamberlain, Daladier, Hitler, and Mussolini cedes the Sudetenland to Nazi Germany. All of Europe breathes a sigh of relief, believing war has been avoided - but it has only been delayed by a year. In cinema, Jean Renoir releases The Human Beast with Jean Gabin, a masterpiece of French poetic realism and one of the greatest films in the history of French cinema. In sports, Italian Gino Bartali wins the Tour de France - the same man who, during the Occupation, would use his cycling training to transport forged papers and save hundreds of Jews. In Gascony, distillation continues in the serenity of a summer that does not yet know what awaits it. After 88 years of aging in Gascon oak barrels, the 1938 Armagnacs carry within them the gravity of a suspended era: deep rancio, ultra-candied prunes, incense, and noble spices. Witnesses to a world on the brink of upheaval.
