The first merchant-breeder was Léonce LAFONTAN (1865-1939), originally a horse merchant, who, in addition to being a winegrower, became a Merchant-Breeder in 1897 by founding the LAFONTAN House. His primary activity, and his knowledge of the region, allowed him to make a meticulous selection when purchasing old Armagnacs from the best crus. Thus, Maison LAFONTAN was one of the pioneers in selling Armagnac in bottles. It was in 1904 that he created the "VEUVE LAFONTAN & ses Enfants" range in homage to his deceased mother.
