Armagnac 1986: the vintage of the prosperous decade

1986 in Gascony: A Balanced and Generous Harvest

1986 remains a beautiful chapter in the history of Gascon vintages. After the thermal excesses of previous years, the 1986 vintage benefited from a mild and consistent summer, with well-distributed rainfall and slow grape ripening. Well-formed bunches with preserved natural acidity — the ideal base for brandies that are both round and structured.

A 1986 Armagnac: Over 40 Years of Aging in Oak Barrels

Distilled in the autumn of 1986 according to Gascon tradition (continuous distillation in an Armagnac alembic still), these brandies have patiently aged in black Gers oak barrels. Forty years of slow maturation have transformed this concentrated juice into a spirit of beautiful complexity: notes of prune, vanilla, sweet spices, leather, candied fruits, and a persistent, velvety finish.

Why is 1986 Armagnac so sought after?

Three reasons explain the growing appeal of this vintage:

  • Rarity: After more than 40 years, stocks are irrevocably dwindling. Every bottle sold is one less bottle in the world.
  • Harvest quality: The favorable climatic conditions of 1986 produced well-ripened and balanced grapes, the basis for a brandy with a harmonious structure.
  • The symbolism of the gift: A 1986 Armagnac is the ideal birthday gift for a 40th birthday — a bottle born the same year as its recipient.

  • Pure tasting: Choose a Darroze or a Jean Cavé Brut de Fût, renowned for the finesse of their single-vineyard selections.
  • Controlled budget: The Monluc Ténarèze 43° offers excellent value for money for this vintage.
